Hart House Theatre Accessibility Improvements

During my first year I took Engineering Strategies and Practices 1. Our team chose to work on improving the accessibility of the aging Hart House Theatre. I first along with my team took dimensions of the area and notes of the surroundings.

I then conducted research on the standards for accessibility in Toronto. As a team we identified key areas that need to be upgraded. I brainstorm 50+ ideas that would improve the accessibility of the theatre. My team and I combined our ideas using a morph chart to come up with a final solution. We decided that handrails, lighted nonslip flooring and folding accessible seats would all improve the accessibility without changing the theatre envelope drastically.

To demonstrate our solutions visually I designed CAD models of each in Fusion360. On the left is the handrail and lighted flooring model that would allow for easier navigation. The right is the folding companion seat that allow for wheelchair access without changing the theater seating arrangement.
